Below is a very basic
list of bird do's and don'ts. Every potential bird owner should research the
different personality traits of individualized species in order to find the
bird that best suits their lifestyle and then further learn about the needs
and care of that species.
DO'S
-
Do have an avian veterinarian
lined up before an emergency arises.

Do feed a healthy and balanced
diet daily. In addition to pellets and seeds, be sure to offer a variety of
foods such as fresh fruits, veggies, pasta, whole grain breads, cooked beans and
rice.

Do make sure your bird has
access to food and water at all times.

Do try and provide the largest
cage that you can both afford and accommodate.

Do practice good sanitation by
keeping your bird's food and water fresh and the cage clean.

Do keep your bird's wings
trimmed.

Do establish a daily routine
that allows your bird adequate social time as well as rest.

Do supply your bird with toys
that will keep it mentally and physically stimulated.

Do bathe your bird at least
once a week.

Do expose your bird to fresh
air and sunlight during good weather.
DON'TS

Don't feed your bird foods
high in fat, salt or sugar. Never feed chocolate, avocado or apple seeds.

Don't leave your bird outside
of it's cage unsupervised.

Don't expose your bird to
household dangers or toxins.

Don't delay in taking your
bird to the vet if it is showing signs of illness.

Don't ever discipline your
bird by hitting or yelling.

Don't spend more time early on
in your relationship with your bird than you are prepared to spend later.
